The second album by Puerto Rican alternative-experimental duo Calle 13 is without a doubt one of the greatest sophomore musical projects I have ever had the pleasure of listening. In this following to their hit self-titled debut album Calle 13 Residente and Visitante give us some hip hop, less reggaetón and more variation, the type of variation that will later evolve greatly in future releases. In this album the group delivers such hits as “Tango del Pecado (ft. Bajofondo Tango Club and Panasuyo)” which ironically is an alternative reggaetón song with nothing to do with tango; “Un Beso de Desayuno” which could probably be considered as the first duo released by the duo; and “Pa’l Norte (ft. Orishas)” which is heavily influenced by a mix of hip hop and South American music.
Like in their first album, in this Residente o Vistante we also get sexual, patriotic, conscious, political and of course comedic lyrics. All of these which are to be seen in future projects by the Puerto Rican experimental duo.
In conclusion this album, like its predecessor, is yet another masterpiece which many people love and many people hate. Some people, like me, think it is pure genius while others think it is pure trash because of its explicit lyrics, which really what they do is be in your face no holds barred. The lyrics basically state “this is how it is and you gotta face things how they are”, which is something that I really admire a lot about Calle 13 because they tell you the truth in the way that we, the majority, talk not in a fancy way that leaves you asking “What the hell did he just say?” No he is right there in your face this is how it is now face it. Anyway, to finally end this piece I love this album in its entirety from the first song to the last, including each and every single interlude (by Pan con Ajo's Arroz con Habichuelas)
